PA 655 is one of my favorites – it is a pleasure to ride from start to finish, offering over 90 miles of enjoyment.  In order to qualify as a great motorcycle road (IMHO), it must be relatively free of traffic, stop lights, stop signs, driveways and intersections.  While PA655 does have a few stop signs and lights – it’s mostly scenic, rural riding through mountain valleys.  The road conditions are very good over the entire length of the road – its relatively free of potholes, rough patches and tar snakes.

Directions:

I describe the route starting on its Southern end in Hancock, Md where it begins as Pennsylvania Ave at Old US40.  Its Northern-most end intersects with US322 in Reedsville,Pa approximately 20 miles from State College.

Description:

As you head out of Hancock,Md the road is very tame for the first 10 miles until you cross US522.  After crossing US522 the road begins to offer many more gentle curves and rolling hills - nothing technical or overly challenging.  In the few open spaces you are treated to some beautiful scenic views that are worth taking-in!

A typical corner on the southern end of PA 655 – there are plenty of these

pa655-011

Very peaceful and secluded – except for the rumble of a big V-Twin !!!!

pa655-027

You get the idea… much of this road has a gentle rhythm to it.

pa655-019

At around the 30 mile mark – you begin to be treated with some great views of the mountains…my camera doesnt do it justice…

Shortly after crossing US522 (again) at Mill Creek, the personality of the road changes drastically as it cuts through a wide-open valley full of gorgeous farmland and quaint Mennonite communities – watch for buggies!

pa655-040

A nice view of the valley – just a few miles south of Menno,Pa

I hope you get the opportunity to ride this road in its entirety – I believe you will enjoy it.  What PA655 lacks in the way of amenities, it makes-up for in the quality of the ride!
